Bringing the Excitement of Sailing to Fans
Sailing events attract a huge number of people, but understanding the on-water action is difficult and the analytics of sailing is complex. SAP Sports Sponsoring asked the Design & Co-Innovation Center from SAP to create a solution, which would bring the excitement of sailing closer to the fans. While there are several applications for professional sailors where they document their results, there has been no practical and well-designed app for the spectators at sailing events. With this realization the focus for the sailing app was defined.
Our app should differentiate itself from other sports apps. This is why we not only wanted to include the event plan in our solution, but also consider the analytics of the race and the results,– says Beate Riefer (Design Strategist at the Design & Co-Innovation Center from SAP).
Designing the Fan Experience
To learn more about the proposed users, the Design & Co-Innovation Center interviewed spectators at sailing events throughout Europe to find out why they came to the races. Based on their findings they created a persona, a fictional character representing the most common spectator types: Peter, a 38-year-old event spectator with basic sailing and regatta knowledge. He wants to track his best friend sailing at the event, follow the competition and get inspired by the action. To meet these needs, the Design & Co-Innovation Center team designed an app to be used on the spot. They wanted to make it easier to get the desired information, such as scores and starting times, by focusing on the “now-moment”, the current moment in time. The designers tested the scenario on an iPhone with users who have some sailing experience, but are not professional sailors, to ensure the app would add value. With the users’ feedback, they redesigned the navigation flow and improved the way of displaying the analytics to offer the users a better adoption experience. Next, they developed a responsive design for bigger screen sizes in their iterative process and worked on the interaction specification and the visual design, which resulted in an appealing responsive solution.
Following Sailing Events from Anywhere
The SAP Sailing Analytics app provides sailing fans with all the information they want to receive about sailing events, which can be accessed anywhere. The navigation consists of only three layers to ensure a simple and friendly experience. Users can track the scores of the boat fleets and regattas during the race or afterwards in an innovative visualization. They can follow the leaderboard and highlight their favorite sailor so that his position will always appear upfront in the scores. These features do not only support the focus on the “now-moment”, but it also enables users to retrieve past data and to be informed about upcoming events. The SAP Sailing Analytics app is currently in development.
This project was a good example of how good ideas can finally come to life and how a creative process can result in an innovative and easy-to-use solution. The AppHaus was a suitable working and testing space to putting our creativity into practice,– said Jorn Munnik (Design Strategist at SAP).
